Tapping Into The Hidden Job Market

Jobs at Discount Retail Companies

From the Family Dollar website:

Family Dollar, a Fortune 500 company, is headquartered just outside of Charlotte, NC, and is one of the fastest growing discount retail chains in the United States. Family Dollar operates over 6,600 stores in a contiguous 44-state area ranging northeast to Maine, southeast to Florida, as far northwest as Idaho and southwest to Arizona.

A visit to their career pages will show hundreds of openings across the country. This includes openings in their stores, distribution centers, or home office.  A profile posted on their website provides a nice overview of what they’re about:

Over 6,600 stores located in 44 states.
Competitive Pay and Benefits for full & part-time associates
Excellent Growth Potential
Committed to promoting from within
Hands-on Training Programs
Merit-based promotions and regular Performance Appraisals
Successful, Stable Company

Companies of this type always THRIVE when the economy is on a downturn.  According to

While some big-box competitors are shutting stores, the Family Dollar chain is thriving. Family Dollar…topped the Standard & Poor’s 500 index last year with a 36 percent stock-value increase. In a news release Wednesday, it reported a second-quarter net income of $84.1 million, up 33 percent from $63.3 million in the second quarter last year.

Also, their shares rose 6% to a new high.  Because shopping habits tend to change with the economy, this type of employer tends to offer a bit more stability than most other industries.

According to an artile in the Jacksonville Business Journal, “sales plummeted for most retailers during one of the worst fourth quarters and years in decades, but other discount dollar store chains also flourished during the quarter and throughout 2008.”

On Careerbuilder, Dollar General has 195 openings posted. Family Dollar: 172 . Dollar Thrifty: 199.

Create a plan to research this industry and determine if any of these or similar companies and see what opportunities you can uncover.
